The students of the National Institute of Technology,Jamshedpur were attacked by
the residents of a nearby village here on Monday,27 March 2006. The reason for the
attack was very trivial---the students staged a protest by blocking all the roads going
towards the campus. However, one important fact that deserves mention is that these
people were armed with BOWS & ARROWS !
On friday(24th) evening, 3 boys of the 2k4 batch were strolling inside the campus
near the main gate when suddenly,a bike ran into one of them.Bond(as we call him) was
grieviously injured in the accident and was immediately admitted to the TMH(Tata Memorial
Hospital). The interesting fact is that, according to the two eye-witnesses,the person who
was riding the bike was racing with another bike!! After the accident,he fled from the
scene leaving the bike there, which was later confiscated by the police.
Later, all the students,as a means of protest, decided to seal the roads leading to the college on monday. All vehicles, except those of college staff, were turned back, informing them that the road will be closed for them forever. Actually, the college has no clear boundary line, and figuring out the same is a big task in itself. There are settlements dotting the landscape(sic) around the structures of the college which look like encroachments(it's a fair chance that they are!). These are made up of ugly huts and they have no access roads other than those of the college. So there were some people heading towards such places. They were allowed to go,but not before alighting off their vehicles(phew !!).
I went out for the protests rather late,at 9:30 in the morning.A few policemen were already there;the college authorities had informed them before hand,as a precautionary measure. They were looking over a large crowd that had assembled before the main building.Like all roads, the one going towards a nearby village was also blocked. Not being of a tolerant kind, those people got incensed over this, and soon brought more people of their kind to ward us away. They were well kitted out with hockey sticks, swords and Bows & Arrows;yes I saw them with my own eyes. That's why we like to call them tribals.Who else do you think uses bows & arrows these days.Local newspapers occasionally report about tribals being trained in the Tata Archery Academy. The Tatas are well known for their social contributions, and their efforts for the upliftment of tribals never go unnoticed. However,Tatas' noble intentions can cost us our lives, hope they realise this.
There was a long stand-off between us and those people and an impending clash was repeatedly prevented by the police.Eventually, they started it by hurling stones at us.We too retalliated immediately and chased them away.Meanwhile, I saw a Reporter shooting it all with utmost ease. We confronted him asking how he got here and warned him to stop shooting and surrender the reel. One of us even held his hand, but he rescued himself, abused the guy holding him and tried to run away, only if it were so easy, huh. He was roughed up by us & he soon found himself holed up in the new library. He had no option but to surrender his reel.I asked one bloke there why we beat him up,pat came the reply that this particular scribe always reports false things, things against the college.Well, that more than justifies the act,I thought.Thinking we can now rest err.. protest in peace,we got dispersed from the site, mostly for having lunch. Not even an hour had passed that we were called by our seniors (their hostels are close to that village).
Those people had attacked again and they managed to smash some windows while aiming for us.We students got (naturally) enraged over this.We collected whatever we can lay our hands on --stones,rods,stumps--whatever can be used as weapon, and went ahead. We made it all look like there was going to be a big clash, though somewhere in my mind I knew that was not going to happen.By this time, over five dozen policemen had arrived to "control" the situation. What was dissapointing was that the police were monitoring us while those people were fearlessly vandalising the college.Sometime later in the afternoon, the situation seemed to have come under control.Yet we stayed with our seniors so that they have a sense of security.
We were chatting with our seniors when,at 3:30pm,we got a notice that the college will be closed for an indefinite period and that we were to evacuate by 5pm. This triggered a flurry of activity all around. In no time, students were seen rushing out of the hostels with their luggage.
The college has reopened on 25th April.I come to know that tenders have been invited for constructing a bypass road for those people and compound wall for the college.Still, I won't cry out Hurray! in a hurry. You know the pace of work (typically red tape) in a government institute.
